At Accents Cosmetic Surgery, that philosophy is central to the work of Dr. Mark Berkowitz, a highly specialized surgeon whose approach blends advanced medical training with an artist’s eye.
As a board-certified, fellowship-trained oculofacial plastic surgeon, Berkowitz focuses on the delicate structures of the face and eyes – an area that demands both precision and delicacy. His specialty is so unique that he is one of only a handful of surgeons in Michigan with this level of expertise, drawing patients from across the state and beyond.
A foundation of elite training
Berkowitz’s path to this highly specialized field is rooted in rigorous training and academic excellence. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City University of New York, graduating cum laude, before completing his medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in an accelerated program.
He went on to complete his internship and residency at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he served as chief resident, followed by a prestigious fellowship in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto in 1995.
Today, he is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds fellowship endorsements from both the American Society of Ophthalmic Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

Listening first, then designing
Despite his extensive credentials, Berkowitz’s approach begins with something simple: listening.
“We start with understanding what the person is looking for as an outcome — the timing, and what result will truly make them happy,” he said. “There’s an education on both our parts as to what will work best for them.”
Patients often arrive with a specific procedure in mind, but Berkowitz sees his role as both adviser and collaborator.
“Sometimes patients have heard of a procedure, but that procedure isn’t appropriate for them,” he said. “So we talk through it. We’re here to help people achieve their goals, but if something isn’t realistic or right, we’ll work through other options to get them where they need to be.”
That honesty builds trust and ultimately leads to better outcomes.
“Patients are not cookie-cutter,” he said. “We design an individual plan for each client.”
A sculptor’s eye
With more than 30 years of experience and thousands of procedures performed, Berkowitz has developed a philosophy that merges science with artistry.
“What differentiates me from other professionals is my surgical background,” he said. “I understand the anatomy. I can envision how to enhance someone’s features and, in many cases, take them back to an earlier version of themselves. I work as a sculptor.”
That sculptor’s mindset is especially important in facial aesthetics, where subtle changes can have a profound impact. His goal is not transformation, but refinement, helping patients look refreshed, confident and like themselves.
Over the course of his career, Berkowitz has seen cosmetic procedures evolve dramatically.
“Everything used to revolve around traditional surgery,” he said. “Now we have newer techniques that are far less invasive, with less downtime and lower risk.”
Among those advancements is laser blepharoplasty, a cutting-edge eyelid rejuvenation procedure that Berkowitz was among the first to bring to Michigan after training in New York and Toronto. Unlike traditional eyelid surgery, this technique uses laser technology rather than a scalpel, reducing the need for incisions and minimizing recovery time.
“It allows us to enhance and tighten the skin while avoiding much of the risk associated with traditional surgery,” he said.

“Since COVID, we’ve seen a significant increase in hair restoration,” he said. “It’s something that can really impact confidence for both men and women.”
In addition to his work at Accents, Berkowitz is also the doctor behind Michigan Hair Restoration, which operates out of the same buildings as Accents Cosmetic Surgery.
“I was in my early 30s when I first started noticing that my hair was thinning,” he says in his testimonial. “I blamed it on the stress of medical school and I hoped that once I started my practice and became more established, it would either fill back in or it wouldn’t bother me as much. Well, as we all know, once it’s gone, it doesn’t come back. Even though I pretended I was OK with it, when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t like what I saw.
“As a surgeon, it’s my job to help people look better and feel better about their appearances. I didn’t want my hair loss to affect my career because how could I help others feel better about themselves when I didn’t feel good about myself because of my hair loss?”
He also recognizes the influence of broader trends — such as the rise of weight loss medications — and how they intersect with aesthetic goals. Staying current with these shifts allows him to guide patients thoughtfully and responsibly.
What truly sets Berkowitz apart, however, is not just his expertise, but his commitment to patient care.
“All of my patients have my cell phone number,” he said. “I personally call them after a procedure to see how they’re doing.”
